Hybrid & Electric Vehicle Service

Most of what a hybrid or an electric car needs is not exotic. It still wears brakes and tires, still needs alignment and suspension work, still has a cooling system, and still has a 12-volt battery that will strand it in a parking lot. We do that work, and we tell you plainly when a job belongs at a dealer instead. Call with the year and model before you come in.

The 12-volt battery is the usual culprit

A hybrid or EV that will not wake up is far more often a dead 12-volt battery than anything to do with the drive battery. That small battery runs the computers and the contactors that connect the high-voltage system, so when it is weak nothing else gets a chance to work. Desert heat shortens its life the way it does any battery. We test it under load, watch how it charges, and look for the parasitic drain that keeps killing it, rather than pointing at the expensive battery first.

Brakes wear differently, and that has a downside

Regenerative braking slows the car with the motor, so the friction brakes do less work and pads can last far longer than on a conventional car. The catch is that brakes which rarely get used seize, corrode, and stick, and the first sign is often a pull, a drag, or a parking brake that will not release. Long pad life is not the same as a healthy brake system, so the calipers, slides, and fluid get inspected on their own schedule instead of waiting for the pads to run out.

Cooling is not just for the engine

These vehicles run cooling loops for the battery pack, the inverter, and the electronics, sometimes entirely separate from anything the gasoline engine uses. Coolant in those loops has a service life and a specification that is not interchangeable with what is in a conventional radiator. In this climate, a loop that is not doing its job shows up as reduced performance or a warning long before it shows up as a puddle. We use what your vehicle calls for and check the loops it actually has.

What belongs here and what belongs at a dealer

Brakes, tires, alignment, suspension, steering, cooling, filters, the 12-volt system, and diagnosis of a warning light are ordinary work here. High-voltage battery pack replacement and some manufacturer-specific software work belong at a dealer or a specialist, and on certain models those parts are not sold to independent shops at all. Call with the year and model and we will tell you which side of that line your job falls on before you drive over.
