Usually the wear indicator, a small metal tab built into the pad that contacts the rotor once the friction material wears down. The squeal is deliberate. It can also come from glazed pads, dust or a stone caught in the assembly, or hardware needing lubrication. Either way it is worth an inspection, because the difference between a pad job and a pad plus rotor job is often a few weeks.

Get it looked at now. Grinding usually means the friction material is gone and metal is contacting the rotor or drum, which cuts grooves into the surface and lengthens stopping distance while it happens. Driving on it turns a pad replacement into pads plus rotors, and sometimes a caliper too.

A soft pedal points to air or moisture in the hydraulic system, a fluid leak, a failing master cylinder, or a flexible hose swelling under pressure. Those are hydraulic faults rather than wear items, and all of them affect how the vehicle stops. This is the symptom to act on soonest.

Follow the interval in your owner’s manual and have the fluid tested when the vehicle is serviced. Whether you drive the car or park it, age matters as much as mileage. Our test will indicate the condition of your fluid.

Not every time, but replacement is what we recommend. A rotor can be machined if it will still exceed the manufacturer minimum thickness after cutting, and machining leaves it thinner and more prone to warping later. If it measures below minimum, is cracked, or has hard spots, it gets replaced, because a thin rotor sheds heat poorly and warps again quickly. We document the measurements, and we will show them to you if you want to see them.

Pulsation through the pedal or wheel usually comes from the rotor warping. Heat cycling and uneven pad deposits cause it. Machining or replacing the rotor fixes the vibration; leaving it wears the pads unevenly and gets worse.

The anti-lock system has disabled itself and stored a fault, commonly a dirty or failed wheel speed sensor, damaged wiring, or a hydraulic module problem. Your normal brakes still work, but anti-lock assistance will not be there in a panic stop or on a loose surface. It is a scan-tool diagnosis, not a guess.

There is no honest mileage answer, because pad life depends on driving style, vehicle weight, terrain, and how much stop-and-go you do. Two identical cars can have different brake wear. Ask about measuring the pad thickness rather than relying on a mileage prediction.
