Failed Smog Check Repair and Retest
A failed smog check holds up your registration. At a test-only station it also starts a round trip: get it repaired somewhere else, then come back for the retest. We are licensed to do both, so the diagnosis, the repair, and the retest all happen here.
Why cars fail
Most failures come from a short list. A check engine light is an automatic failure no matter how well the car drives. So is an unfinished set of self-tests, which is what happens when someone clears the codes shortly before the test. After that: a worn-out catalytic converter, tired oxygen sensors, a leak in the fuel vapor system, a misfire, and on older cars a fuel or timing problem that shows up in the tailpipe numbers. There is also a visual failure, which means an emissions part is missing, unhooked, or not legal here.
Parts have to be California legal
California requires emissions parts to carry a state approval number, and a part without one fails the visual check even if your car runs clean. That catches a lot of people who bought an intake, a converter, or a tune online. We fit parts that are legal for your vehicle in this state, which is also what keeps the retest from turning into a third trip.
State help, and when you need a referee
California runs a program that can help pay for smog repairs if your income qualifies, or pay you to retire the car instead. We serve people in that program, and the state publishes the current rules and the repair limit. Separately, the state runs referee stations for disputed results and for cars a normal station cannot test, like one with a swapped engine. If yours is a referee case, we will tell you that instead of testing it again.
What's included
- Diagnosis of the specific failure, not a parts list
- Emissions repairs with California-legal parts
- Self-tests confirmed complete before the retest

Failed Smog Check Repair: questions we get asked
My car failed. What happens now?
You find out what failed and why, in plain language, before any repair is authorized. Because we test and repair, the diagnosis and the fix happen here and we retest when the work is done. At a test-only station that same failure turns into two more trips somewhere else.
How long do I have to fix it?
Your registration deadline is the clock that matters, and that comes from the DMV, not from us. Bring the renewal notice with the car so we can work to the date you actually have.
Can I get help paying for smog repairs?
Possibly. California offers repair assistance to owners who meet an income limit and whose car failed its regular smog check, plus a separate option to retire the vehicle. The state sets the eligibility rules and the dollar limit. Ask when you call and bring your paperwork.
Will a new catalytic converter fix my failure?
Sometimes, and sometimes it is the most expensive way to treat a symptom. Converters usually die because something else killed them, like a misfire, a bad oxygen sensor, or an engine burning oil. Replace the converter without fixing that and you will be buying another one. We find the cause first, then quote the converter if it is genuinely finished.
I cleared the code and now it says the tests are not ready.
That is expected. Clearing codes wipes the car’s self-test results, and California fails a vehicle whose tests are not complete. It takes a fair amount of driving to finish them, and if the original fault is still there the light comes back first. Fixing the cause is the only route that ends with a certificate.
Do you handle failed smog on motorhomes and work trucks?
Usually yes, and size is what stops most stations, not the rules. Our bay takes vehicles that will not fit elsewhere. Call (760) 343-3535 with the year, chassis, and fuel type and we will confirm before you make the drive.
