Sometimes, and sometimes it is the most expensive way to treat a symptom. Converters usually die because something else killed them, like a misfire, a bad oxygen sensor, or an engine burning oil. Replace the converter without fixing that and you will be buying another one. We find the cause and quote it first, then replace the converter only if it is genuinely needed.

That is expected. Clearing codes wipes the car’s self-test results, and California fails a vehicle whose tests are not complete.
