Brake Fluid Flush and Bleed
When you press the pedal, fluid in a sealed line is what pushes the brakes at each wheel. That fluid is the one brake part that wears out from age rather than from use, because it slowly pulls water out of the air. Water is what turns a firm pedal soft right when you are braking hard. We test yours instead of guessing by color.
Water is the problem, heat is what exposes it
Brake fluid absorbs a little moisture every year, right through the reservoir and the rubber hoses. Water boils at a much lower temperature than brake fluid, and boiling fluid turns to vapor. Vapor squishes, liquid does not, so the pedal goes soft or sinks toward the floor exactly when you are braking down a grade or in heavy traffic. That same water rusts the brake parts from the inside, which is the damage you never see coming.
What we test, and what a flush really is
We measure two things: how much water the fluid has taken on, and how worn out its rust protection is. Dark fluid is not automatically bad and clear fluid is not automatically good, which is why a look in the reservoir does not settle it. A flush means pushing fresh fluid through the lines at each wheel until what comes out matches what went in, working around the car in the order the carmaker specifies. On a lot of vehicles we also have to run the anti-lock unit with a scan tool so the old fluid trapped inside it gets replaced too.
A soft pedal is not always old fluid
Old fluid is one cause. Air in the lines, a leak at a hose or caliper, or a worn master cylinder, which is the part your pedal pushes on, all feel the same from the driver seat. Those are failures, not maintenance, and a flush will not fix any of them. So we inspect the system before selling you fluid, because the leak version is the one that gets worse.

How often should brake fluid be replaced?
Go by the interval in your owner’s manual, and have the fluid tested in between. Because it absorbs water whether you drive the car or park it, age matters as much as mileage. A car that sat through a couple of hot summers is not exempt. The test tells you where yours actually stands.
Is a flush the same as bleeding the brakes?
No. Bleeding gets air out of the system, usually after a repair opened a line. A flush replaces all the old fluid in the car. Bleeding is one step inside a flush, not a substitute for one.
Can I use DOT 3 if my car calls for DOT 4?
Use what the cap on the reservoir and your manual say. DOT 4 handles more heat before it boils, and a lot of newer vehicles require it. Putting the lower-rated fluid in a car designed for the higher one gives up heat resistance you may need on a long downhill. And never add DOT 5 silicone fluid to a normal system, because the two do not mix.
My pedal slowly sinks to the floor when I hold it. What is that?
A pedal that keeps sinking under steady pressure means fluid is escaping somewhere, either out of a leak or past the seals inside the master cylinder. That is a safety fault, not maintenance. Have it looked at before you drive it further.
Do you have to flush the fluid every time you do the pads?
No. If the fluid tests good, pads and discs are their own job. We recommend a flush when the test says so or when your manual’s interval comes due, and we tell you which of the two it is.
