Alternator Diagnosis and Replacement
The alternator recharges your battery and powers everything electrical once the engine is running. When it quits completely, you are running off the battery and the clock is short. When it half quits, the symptoms are strange enough that people replace the wrong parts first.
What a failing alternator looks like
The classic version: a battery light on the dash, headlights that dim at idle and brighten when you rev, and a car that runs until the battery is used up and then dies. A partial failure is sneakier. It can leave the car charging but with electrical noise that upsets the radio and the computers, or it can slowly drain the battery overnight. If a bearing is going, you will hear a whine or growl that follows engine speed.
We test the whole charging circuit, not just the part
Output at the alternator is only half the story. We measure what it puts out under load, check for the electrical noise a partly failed alternator makes, and then check whether that power is actually reaching the battery, because a corroded cable or a bad ground connection starves the battery while the alternator works perfectly. We check the drive belt and its tensioner too, since a glazed belt slipping on a hot pulley dims your lights exactly like a worn alternator does, for a fraction of the price.
Newer cars charge on purpose, not constantly
A lot of newer vehicles deliberately vary how hard they charge, backing off under acceleration and charging harder when you coast, to save fuel. That means a single voltage reading at one moment can look low and be exactly right. So we read the charging system through the car’s own data as well as at the battery. Any shop that condemns an alternator off one meter reading is guessing.
