Transmission Service
Transmission fluid does more work than engine oil. It lubricates, it carries heat away, it provides the pressure that shifts the gears, and it gives the clutches inside something to grip. It also breaks down with heat, and heat is the one thing this valley never runs short of. Skipping transmission service is the most expensive thing you can put off, because the repair on the other side of it is a transmission.
The fluid is not one-size-fits-all
Automatic transmissions are built around one specific fluid, and the differences are real, not marketing. A regular automatic, a CVT, and a dual-clutch each need their own fluid, and the wrong fluid in a CVT can ruin it in a short distance. We look up what your vehicle specifies and use that, including on transmissions the factory calls sealed or fill-for-life. Sealed does not mean the fluid stops aging. It means the factory did not give you a dipstick.
What service includes, and what it will not do
Depending on your vehicle, service means draining and refilling, dropping the pan for a new filter and gasket, or exchanging the fluid, and on many cars the fill has to be done at a specific fluid temperature to get the level right. If your transmission has a cooler, we inspect it and its lines, because a restriction there cooks the fluid no matter how new it is. What service will not do is fix a transmission that is already slipping, and we will say that to your face rather than selling you a flush as a repair.
Heat and towing shorten the interval
Carmakers publish a normal schedule and a heavy-duty one, and towing, hauling, constant high heat, and heavy traffic all put you on the heavy-duty side. Work trucks are almost always on it. That is not an upsell, it is the same reason the fleet vehicles we service run on the shorter schedule by default.

Do I really need transmission service?
If your carmaker lists an interval, yes. The fluid breaks down with heat whether anything feels wrong or not, and the failure it prevents is one of the biggest bills on the car. If you do not have your manual, bring the vehicle and we will look up the schedule.
My transmission is slipping. Will new fluid fix it?
Usually not. Slipping generally means the clutches inside are worn or the pressure has dropped, and fresh fluid restores neither. Service is maintenance, not repair. We will tell you what we think is going on instead of taking your money for a flush that changes nothing.
What does burnt-smelling fluid mean?
It means the fluid has been overheated and the friction material inside has been cooking. It is a reason to inspect before servicing. Dark, burnt fluid in a transmission that still shifts fine is worth acting on quickly.
Is a flush better than a drain and fill?
It depends on your vehicle and the condition of the fluid, and anybody who gives you one answer for every car is guessing. Some carmakers specify an exchange, others a pan drop with a filter. We do what yours calls for.
My transmission is sealed. Does that mean no service ever?
No. It means there is no dipstick and the fill is fussier, usually needing a temperature check to set the level. The fluid still ages, especially in heat and under load.
