Tire Rotation, Balancing and Repair
Tires are the most expensive wear item most drivers buy and the easiest one to waste. Rotating them, keeping the pressure right, and getting them balanced costs very little, and it decides whether a set lasts as long as it should or gets thrown away at half its life.
Rotation, and why the pattern matters
Front and rear tires wear differently, and on most cars the front pair works harder. Moving them around on a schedule evens that out so the whole set wears together and the car keeps handling the way you expect. The right pattern depends on your vehicle and your tires. Some tires only run one direction and have to stay on their own side, some cars have different sizes front and rear and cannot be rotated front to back at all, and all-wheel-drive vehicles are the least forgiving of mismatched tires. We rotate the way your car calls for and reset the tire pressure light if it needs it.
Balancing and alignment fix different complaints
Balancing evens out the weight around a spinning wheel, and weight that is off is what causes vibration. Alignment sets the angles your wheels sit at, and angles that are off are what cause pulling and chewed-up tread. Where you feel the shake narrows it further: a vibration in the steering wheel usually comes from the front, one you feel in the seat usually comes from the rear, and one that only shows up while braking is a brake problem, not a tire problem.
When we can repair a tire and when we cannot
A nail hole in the tread can be repaired properly, which means taking the tire off the wheel and patching it from the inside. A plug jammed in from the outside at the roadside is a get-home measure, not a repair. What cannot be fixed safely: holes in the sidewall or the shoulder, cuts deep enough to expose the belts, and any tire driven flat long enough to damage its structure. California also requires at least 1/32 of an inch of tread in the main grooves, and in this climate tires often crack from sun and heat before they wear out.

How often should tires be rotated?
Most carmakers give an interval in the owner’s manual, and pairing it with an oil change is the easy way to remember. If you are already seeing uneven wear front to back, rotate sooner and have the alignment checked, because wear that uneven usually has a cause.
Is balancing the same as an alignment?
No. Balancing fixes vibration. Alignment fixes pulling and uneven tread wear. A shake that shows up around highway speed is a balance issue. A pull or a tire worn down on one edge is alignment.
Can you repair the nail in my tire?
If it is in the tread and has not damaged the structure, yes, with the tire off the wheel and patched from the inside. Sidewall and shoulder holes cannot be fixed safely, and neither can a tire that got driven flat. We will show you where the damage is and why it falls on one side of that line.
How do I know when tires need replacing?
California requires at least 1/32 of an inch of tread in the main grooves, and wet-weather grip gets bad well before that. Also watch for cracks in the sidewall, uneven wear, and any bulge, which is a structural problem. Out here, sun and heat age tires that still look like they have tread left.
Why is my new set wearing unevenly already?
Alignment, usually. Angles that are off by a small amount drag the tread sideways every foot you drive and can scrub a new tire down in a few thousand miles. Worn suspension parts and running underinflated do it too. Worth catching early, because tread does not grow back.
